Let’s Make Hierbas

Come discover the herbs of Mallorca… in a glass… in a drink made by you! Hierbas is the traditional liquor that’s loved across the island, and all the locals know the best stuff is homemade. Gather on a local's home patio as the sun sets and brew your own Hierbas to keep — 100% natural and way better than what you’d buy at the duty-free shop!

  • Locals in Mallorca love to gather with friends around a table and share some homemade Hierbas (a liquor made from anise and other local herbs). That’s why we’re inviting you to come make your own bottle of Hierbas, just like a local!

Your Mallorca tour meets at the Palma bus station, and from there we all head to your guide’s home village of Esporles, a lovely community in the Serra Tramuntana mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage site).

Once we’re in town, we walk the hills and collect the herbs we need to make our Hierbas liquor. Learn about local plant life while taking in the spectacular natural landscape. Some plants are easier to find at home than on the hill though, so we also visit our own garden and forage for rosemary, chamomile, and maybe one or two other herbs – there’s no better way to get a taste for local life than exploring a local’s garden!

Once we’ve gathered all the herbs, we gather ourselves on your guide’s patio and start to prepare our bottles. You get to choose the herbs you prefer to put in your own personal concoction.

After all that Hierbas brewing, we take a break and indulge in a merienda — a light snack typical of Mallorca. We nibble and have time to chat and share stories as we watch a Spanish sunset.

Your Hierbas takes three months to ferment, so it won’t be ready to drink just yet. But don’t worry, you get to take your bottle home with you. Serve it to some friends back home and savour the experience, just like a Mallorca local.

(Note that if you’re travelling by air and with only carry-on luggage, you can get a smaller-sized bottle of Hierbas to take back with you.)

  • Mrs. Sabine S. from Germany travelled on 29 May 2017:

I booked the tour for my husband as a birthday present and it turned out to be one of the “best.days.” that we had on Mallorca. We are both not much into gardening but our guide Damia had so many interesting fact about the herbs as well as Mallorca and its people that we learnt a lot! We have been to Mallorca many times but been invited to ones house and picking herbs in their garden was a totally new perspective on the islands culture. We thank Damia a lot for welcoming us into his home! We had a wonderful time and we will definitely recommend this tour to our friends!

Ms. Bettina P. from Austria travelled on 21 Aug 2016:

The tour was my highlight during my travel time in Mallorca! Damià was super likeable and could tell just everything about the ingredients for making the liquor and about the villages and the surroundings of Esporles! Collecting them in the beautiful hills and putting them in the bottle was a lot of fun, I think a homemade liquor from Mallorca is the best souvenir you can take back home 🙂 The best part was the typical mallorquin snack-time in the evening in the lovely patio, whre I was able to taste some typical dishes like pa amb oli and sobrasada. I was travelling alone as a girl and therefore had a few doubts when booking the trip, but it was really no problem at all and I felt super comfortable during the whole trip – Damià even was so kind to practice with me my little Spanish during the bus ride! 🙂 I would love to come back soon and try the other tours from urbanadventures in Mallorca too!!
